Engagement Pictures

Hey everyone, I just wanted to share my engagement photos with you. I’m absolutely in love with them and thought I’d share my love with the world! See the bottom of the post for the four things I learned to make your engagement photo experience absolutely perfect!

The hunt for a wedding photographer was an interesting one. After going to a wedding show I was worried that all wedding photographers cost, not several hundred, but several THOUSAND dollars. Yup the average cost for wedding photos from the fair was probably $3000. Being fresh out of university I didn’t really want to spend that much money on photos.

That being said, I know that photos are one of the most important things to book for a wedding. After the day is over, when the cake has been eaten, the dress is packed away, and guests are all tired out, the one souvenir I will have from the day is my wedding photos. These photos will be shown to my children and my grandchildren. They will be framed around the house and be a symbol of the love and commitment between me and my husband.

So I needed a wedding photographer for a not-so-crazy price. The answer I found while browsing kijiji. Future brides, please don’t be scared of booking a photographer off kijiji! There were lots of reputable photographers on there. These are very talented individuals with smaller businesses than the larger more expensive photographers you’ll see at a wedding fair.

After meeting with a couple of wonderful photographers, we chose our favourite, Supriya. Her kijiji ad linked to her Instagram and her website and Supriya shone through her photos. Upon meeting Supriya, we realized that she was around our age, which made her extremely relatable. She was relaxed but professional and I knew instantly I could be comfortable with her as my wedding photographer. You can check out her website here.

We went to Stratford for the day to take our engagement pics. We stopped in at a lovely coffee shop called Edison’s . The owner invited us to come back when the shop was closing so that we could have the place to ourselves for the pictures. Such an incredibly kind woman, she made us coffees and allowed us to use her beautiful coffee shop for about half an hour and get some really amazing pictures.

Shaun and I often go to coffee shops to chat and play cards for an hour. It’s one of our favourite things to do on a weekend so of course we brought along some cards for the photo shoot. We are also planning on incorporating cards into our wedding, so stay tuned for that!

After the coffee shop pictures we took a few pictures walking down the main street. Stratford is an incredibly beautiful town. It is filled with unique shops that I could easily spend hours pursuing. There is a lovely Scottish shop that I always browse when we are in Stratford. Indeed I don’t think I’ve ever been to another Scottish shop in Canada. It’s a lovely reminder of my heritage.

We ended our photo shoot at the bridge where we got engaged. The bridge just happens to be a short walk from our wedding venue, which makes it extra special.

We took some more pictures in the area surrounding the bridge. Which brings me to my first bit of advice for you.

1) If possible take your engagement photos at the location where you got engaged! These photos mean so much to me, especially since I have that little story about them.

2) I also recommend taking pictures in multiple settings if possible. Our engagement photos seem as if they were from two separate sessions, since we have indoor and outdoor pictures. I love this since it feels like we got so much out of our photo session!

3) Take the ring picture! Yes I look at my engagement ring every day, and I love it. But a professional photo of your ring looking oh-so-amazing, that is just priceless!

4) Don’t be afraid to book a photographer off kijiji! I found mine there and she was incredible, as mentioned above. As long as you do your research, you should be fine. So check out their instagram accounts to see if their photography is the style you are looking for. If they have a facebook page, look for reviews there. Ask for references. If you are a bride on a budget, you won’t regret it!

Had a blast with Mary and Shaun’s engagement session today. We went to a cute little cafe in Stratford, Edison’s Cafe. Honestly speaking, I think some people really excel at hospitality – it’s not a trait that everyone has. There’s a certain charm in being greeted by a warm smile, as well as an open heart. I’m thankful to have made acquaintace with Edison’s and absolutely cannot wait to return on a day off!

I am absolutely in love with these pictures. There was a time when we weren’t sure if we would get engagement photos taken, but I definitely don’t regret it. They make me happy every time I look at them, and are great for including in wedding save the dates and invitations! I am planning on making a guestbook out of these photos, so stay tuned for that.

That’s it from me!
